This month in Clarendon
Clarendon is working Jamaica: sugar cane, citrus, cattle and the plains that feed the island. It has no resort strip, which is exactly why travellers who've done the coasts end up here — for the mineral baths at Milk River, the fishing beaches at Rocky Point, and a parish that has no interest in performing for anyone.
The lay of the land
- May Pen — the parish capital, an hour from Kingston on Highway 2000 and the practical base for everything.
- Milk River — the wellness corner of the parish, built around the thermal bath.
- Rocky Point & Jackson Bay — south-coast fishing villages with the freshest seafood in central Jamaica.
- Frankfield & Chapelton — cool country towns climbing north toward Bull Head Mountain.
What to do
Milk River Bath
In continuous use since 1794 and among the most mineral-rich thermal waters on earth. Twenty-minute soaks, by prescription of the attendant.
Denbigh Showground
Home of Jamaica's national agricultural show (Emancipation weekend) and a year-round events ground for the parish.
Rocky Point & Jackson Bay
Working fishing beaches — buy from the boats, watch it cooked on the spot.
Halse Hall Great House
A 17th-century estate house on the plains outside May Pen, one of the oldest surviving buildings in Jamaica.
Bull Head Mountain
The geographic centre of the island, and a proper country hike with no crowds at the top.
Alley & St. Peter's Church
A 1671 church and sugar-era ruins on the southern plain — deep colonial history, almost no visitors.
Where to eat
- May Pen market — curry goat, mannish water and Saturday-morning produce.
- Rocky Point & Jackson Bay — fresh fish, steamed or escoveitched, on the sand.
- Highway 2000 roadside stops — jerk, soup and pan chicken on the Kingston run.
Where to stay
May Pen is the base: quiet whole-home rentals within an hour of Kingston, central to the whole parish, and a fraction of capital prices. Milk River suits wellness travellers staying a few nights for the baths.
What's on: the Clarendon Events Calendar
Heroes' Day civic events in May Pen (October 19), the Milk River Bath wellness high season from November, the May Pen Christmas Grand Market on December 24, and Boxing Day cook-outs at Rocky Point and Jackson Bay.
When to come
Clarendon is hot and dry on the plains — November through March is the comfortable window. The interior around Frankfield and Chapelton runs several degrees cooler year-round.
