This month in Hanover
Hanover is the small western parish that most visitors cross without noticing — 40 minutes of coast road between Montego Bay's airport and Negril's Seven Mile Beach. Slow down. This stretch holds Jamaica's most storied villa estates, a Georgian harbour town almost untouched by tourism, and beaches with nobody on them.
The lay of the land
- Tryall, Sandy Bay & Hopewell — the villa corridor: staffed estates, championship golf and private coves, 30 minutes west of MBJ.
- Lucea — the parish capital, built around one of the Caribbean's finest natural harbours.
- Green Island & Orange Bay — quiet fishing communities on the road to Negril.
- Negril's north end — the top of Seven Mile Beach technically sits in Hanover.
What to do
Tryall Club
Championship golf on a 2,200-acre former sugar estate, with the waterwheel that's been turning since the 1830s.
Lucea Courthouse & clock tower
The town's landmark clock was shipped here by mistake in 1817 — intended for St. Lucia — and Lucea kept it. Still keeping time.
Fort Charlotte
18th-century cannon battery guarding Lucea harbour, with a view across the bay.
Dolphin Head Mountains
Protected forest with endemic plants and birds found nowhere else, and hiking that almost no visitor does.
Blenheim
The restored birthplace of National Hero Sir Alexander Bustamante, inland from Lucea.
Where to eat
- Lucea harbour fish stalls — snapper and parrot fish straight off the boats.
- Hopewell roadside jerk — the best-value pork on the western coast road.
- Villa chefs — most Hanover estates come with a cook; this is how you eat here.
- Negril's beach bars — 20 minutes west when you want a scene.
Where to stay
Hanover is villa territory, full stop: 3- to 10-bedroom staffed estates around Tryall and Hopewell, cliff and cove houses toward Green Island, and quieter, better-value homes on the Lucea side. Groups and multi-generational families are the natural fit.
What's on: the Hanover Events Calendar
The parish's civic Heroes' Day ceremony at Blenheim (October 19), Lucea's Christmas Eve Grand Market, and the December 19–January 3 holiday season along the Tryall villa coast, which books out further ahead than anywhere else in Jamaica.
When to come
December through April is peak and dry; Christmas and New Year villa weeks should be booked 9–12 months out. May, June and November are the value windows.
