This month in Manchester

Manchester is the parish that surprises people. There's no resort strip and barely a beach in it, yet it holds the coolest climate in Jamaica, the oldest golf course in the Caribbean, and Little Ochie — the seafood shack that Jamaicans drive across the island for.

The lay of the land

  • Mandeville — the parish capital at 2,000 feet: Georgian courthouse, parish church, market, and the most English-looking town square in the Caribbean.
  • Ingleside, Brumalia & Caledonia — quiet residential Mandeville, where the whole-home rentals are.
  • Christiana — higher still, deep in farming country; cold mornings and mist.
  • Alligator Pond & Spur Tree — the drop from highland to south coast, and the seafood run.

What to do

Bloomfield Great House

A restored 1800s estate with the best dinner view in the highlands, looking out over Mandeville.

Manchester Golf Club

Founded in 1868 — the oldest course in the Caribbean, and still a nine-hole club with a members' bar and a view.

Alligator Pond & Little Ochie

Fish by the pound, chosen at the counter and cooked how you ask. Twenty-five minutes down Spur Tree Hill and worth every hairpin.

Christiana Bottom

A cool-country hike through farmland to Rasta River and a blue hole, in weather you'd call spring.

Spur Tree Hill lookout

Panoramic drop to the south-coast plains, with roadside food shacks selling curry goat and jerk.

Where to eat

  • Little Ochie (Alligator Pond) — the pilgrimage. Steamed, escoveitched or jerked, by the pound.
  • Spur Tree Hill shacks — the best curry goat on any Jamaican highway.
  • Bloomfield Great House — the parish's proper sit-down dinner.
  • Mandeville market — Saturday produce from Jamaica's most productive farming belt.

Where to stay

Mandeville's residential neighbourhoods deliver exactly what highland travel should: quiet whole-home rentals with verandahs, cool nights that need no air conditioning, and easy driving access to both the south coast and the interior.

What's on: the Manchester Events Calendar

Mandeville Art Fair runs November 12–14, 2026; the Manchester Golf Club's invitational week follows in late November; Christmas Eve brings the Mandeville Grand Market; and Boxing Day belongs to Alligator Pond and Little Ochie.

When to come

Manchester is comfortable year-round — that's the whole point. November through March is dry, cool and clear; bring a light jacket for the evenings, which regularly drop into the teens Celsius.
