Portland: Jamaica's Best Kept Secret

Portland sits on Jamaica's northeast coast where the Blue Mountains tumble straight into the Caribbean. It is the wettest, greenest, most cinematic parish on the island — and the one most travelers never see. While Negril and Montego Bay grew into resort towns, Portland kept its bamboo rafts, hidden coves, and old-money hideaways. This is the Jamaica that Errol Flynn fell in love with in the 1940s, and very little of what he loved has changed.

Why Portland is different

There are no all-inclusive mega-resorts here. The coastline is a string of small bays, river mouths, and cliffside villas tucked into the rainforest. Showers roll through most afternoons — that's why everything is so green — and the air smells of allspice, wet earth, and salt. If you want a swim-up bar and a buffet, Portland is the wrong parish. If you want a hammock under a mango tree and the sound of a river, you've arrived.

The signature experiences

• Rafting the Rio Grande — a 2.5-hour float on a 30-foot bamboo raft, poled by a local captain. Errol Flynn made it famous after watching banana farmers ferry their crop downriver. Go in the morning before the rain starts.
• The Blue Lagoon — 200 feet deep, fed by underground freshwater springs that swirl into the warm Caribbean. Swim out to the cold spots. Bring a snorkel.
• Reach Falls — the most beautiful waterfall in Jamaica, full stop. Hire the licensed local guide at the gate to walk you up the riverbed to the secret pools above the main fall.
• Frenchman's Cove — a postcard cove where a freshwater river meets the sea over white sand. Pay the small entry, claim a thatched cabana, order a Red Stripe.
• Boston Bay — the birthplace of jerk. Eat pork or chicken off the drum from one of the roadside shacks, hot sauce on the side, festival to soak it up.

Where to stay

The sweet spot is the stretch from San San Bay to Drapers, just east of Port Antonio. Hillside villas here look down over San San Beach and Pellew Island, with the Blue Mountains rising behind you. • Day 2: Morning raft trip on the Rio Grande. Afternoon at the Blue Lagoon. Dinner at Mille Fleurs at Hotel Mocking Bird Hill.
• Day 3: Early start to Reach Falls. Lunch at Boston Bay jerk pits. Sunset cocktails at the Bush Bar at Geejam before the drive back.

When to come

Portland is the wettest parish — accept it. November through April is drier and cooler; the shoulder months (May, October) are lush and quiet. Hurricane risk peaks August–September. Whatever month you pick, pack a light rain shell and shoes you don't mind getting wet.

Portland rewards travelers who slow down. Give it three nights minimum and let the rhythm take over.
