St. Ann Parish Guide: Ocho Rios, Runaway Bay & the Garden Parish

St. Ann is known as Jamaica's Garden Parish for good reason: lush green hills tumble down to a coastline dotted with waterfalls, rivers, and some of the calmest beaches on the north shore. It's the adventure capital of the island — home to Dunn's River Falls, Mystic Mountain, and Dolphin Cove — and also the birthplace of two Jamaican legends: Bob Marley (Nine Mile) and Marcus Garvey (St. Ann's Bay).

The lay of the land

  • Ocho Rios — the cruise-ship hub and adventure launching pad. Compact, walkable downtown; nearby resorts stretch east to Mammee Bay.
  • Runaway Bay — 20 minutes west of Ocho Rios. Calmer beaches, championship golf at Cardiff Hall, and a quieter, family-friendly vibe.
  • Discovery Bay — small residential stretch between Runaway Bay and Trelawny; home to Puerto Seco Beach and Green Grotto Caves.
  • St. Ann's Bay and Nine Mile (inland) — Marcus Garvey's hometown and, an hour into the hills, Bob Marley's birthplace and mausoleum.

What to do

Climb Dunn's River Falls

The iconic 600-foot cascading waterfall you can climb hand-in-hand up the tiered rocks. Go early (8am opening) to beat the cruise crowds.

Bamboo raft the White River or Great River

A 90-minute float on a captain-poled bamboo raft. Peaceful, jungle-lined, and the perfect antidote to a busy travel day.

Mystic Mountain

Bobsled ride, zipline, and chairlift up a rainforest peak with panoramic views of Ocho Rios harbour. Half-day trip with lunch.

Dolphin Cove and Konoko Falls

Swim with dolphins and stingrays, then walk the botanical gardens at Konoko — often overlooked, quieter than Dunn's, and just as beautiful.

Nine Mile (Bob Marley birthplace)

An hour into the hills. The tour is a pilgrimage: Marley's childhood home, meditation stone, and mausoleum. Guides are family members.

Green Grotto Caves

Underground limestone caves with a subterranean lake. Cool, quiet, and a great rainy-day escape.

Where to eat

  • Miss T's Kitchen (Ocho Rios) — the best sit-down Jamaican meal in town. Try the curry goat or the coconut-crusted fish.
  • Scotchies (Ocho Rios) — the north-coast branch of the island's best jerk chicken chain.
  • Ocho Rios Jerk Centre — no-frills local jerk stand, cheaper and arguably tastier than Scotchies.
  • Toscanini (Harmony Hall) — the best Italian on the island, tucked into a restored great house 15 minutes east of Ocho Rios.
  • Ultimate Jerk Centre (Runaway Bay) — the go-to jerk stop between Ocho Rios and Falmouth.

Where to stay

  • Ocho Rios villas and condos — beachfront 1- to 4-bedroom units, walking distance to town and Dunn's River.
  • Runaway Bay estates — larger 4- to 8-bedroom villas with full staff, private pools, and beach access. Popular for family reunions.
  • Discovery Bay hillside homes — panoramic ocean-view properties, quieter and often better value than beachfront.

A perfect long weekend

  • Day 1: Arrive MBJ, drive 90 minutes east to Ocho Rios. Sunset beach walk at Turtle Beach.
  • Day 2: Dunn's River Falls at opening, lunch at Miss T's, Dolphin Cove afternoon.
  • Day 3: Day trip to Nine Mile (Marley), lunch in the hills, evening bamboo raft on the White River.
  • Day 4: Runaway Bay beach day, round of golf at Cardiff Hall or Green Grotto Caves tour.

When to come

St. Ann is a year-round destination. December through April is peak; May and June are the value sweet spot with excellent weather. Avoid weekends when cruise ships are in port if you want Dunn's River to yourself — check the schedule and go on a Tuesday or Wednesday.

St. Ann is where Jamaica goes wide — waterfalls, rainforest, dolphins, reggae history — all within a 30-mile stretch of coast. Come for the adventure, stay for the greenery.
